Gloucester Road Chosen Charities for Christmas 2015

The Gloucester Road BID committee have chosen two charities to support this year, on behalf of the Traders of Gloucester Road.

For Christmas 2015, we will be supporting the North Bristol Food Bank and the Julian Trust Night Shelter. Both wonderful Charities who do an immense amount of good work locally, and who we all hope to help by raising plenty of much needed cash through our shops and Prize Draw.

Although entry to our Christmas Prize Draw is free, there is a suggested donation to the charities to take part (which is by no means necessary to enter).

A little about the Julian Trust Night Shelter
The Julian Trust Night Shelter, also known as the Bristol Night Shelter, is located in premises in Little Bishop Street, on the edge of St Pauls in Bristol.
The premises were converted from a warehouse to fulfill the specific purpose of a Night Shelter; the money being raised by public donation. In the Night Shelter the facilities for guests comprise a large dormitory with eighteen emergency beds, a dining area, bathrooms with toilet and shower facilities. There is also a kitchen, stores, laundry and offices. There are separate facilities for volunteers that include a lounge, bedroom, toilet and shower facilities.
For more information about the charity and what they do, visit their website at: http://juliantrust.org.uk/

A little about the North Bristol Foodbank
The 'North Bristol Foodbank' exists to serve the communities of Horfield, Lockleaze, Filton, Southmead, Patchway and Bradley Stoke.

Food is donated by Supermarket collections, schools, churches, businesses and individuals, and all food given out by foodbanks is donated.
Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher.Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank outlet where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.
For more information about the charity and what they do, visit their website at:

Trader Interview - MAKE

This week, we caught up with Julia from MAKE, to find out more about her fabulous shop!

How long has your business been trading on Gloucester Road?
About 11 years

What made you choose Gloucester Road for opening your business?
Gloucester Road is a lot like our shop - laid back, colourful, a bit quirky and not too worried about following the dictates of fashion!

What have been the highlights for you since opening your business?
Moving to larger premises, allowing us to showcase our lovely stuff much better.

What kinds of products/services does your business offer?
Women's daywear, costume jewellery and accessories

Is there anything your business does that people might not be aware of?
We're always happy to make suggestions and offer advice. Some people know what they like and what suits them, but lots don't and we love helping these people find that perfect outfit or accessory. Big department stores call this a 'Personal Shopper' service but we've always done it, and for free!
One of our best kept secrets is our toybox - an invaluable distraction when Mums need to try stuff on or browse but their kids don't want them to.

Which business do you use yourself on Gloucester Road?
Most of them at Christmas! I also love the range of food shops and greengrocers.

What do you like most about Gloucester Road?
Lots of things. Most of all the diversity of all the shops, cafes, restaurants and bars - you can get pretty much anything here without having to resort to travelling further afield. I love that it feels so local too - lots of familiar 'characters' wander up and down, and it's really friendly. It's great when someone unfamiliar with Gloucester Road wanders into the shop wide-eyed and amazed at just how fabulous this street is!
